We don’t talk is an intriguing documentary of in-depth conversations between therapists and youngsters who are entangled in the complex network of sexual violence and exploitation. It takes us into the inner struggle of four characters in their process to break free from this world while they are all still — to a greater or lesser extent – connected to it and can’t seem to part with. The film offers an intimate insight into the reminiscent of their experiences and process of extrication, where the distorted self-judgment of guilt and shame holds them captive.
A close look at the dynamics of therapy, pointing out the importance of early signalling of youngsters who experience this and to start conversation in a world in which they often feel it’s not safe to talk.
Director Marjolein Busstra examines from the point of view of these youngsters in a diligent and nuanced way and thereby gives insights into the complexity of their situation and its grey areas. Witnessing the intimate therapy sessions, with her camera solely showing the therapists, and never the youngsters themselves, she shows the importance of listening without any judgement and the importance of being taken seriously.
Visual metaphorical scenes give space to the heavy therapy dialogues. Despite of their severe situation, the characters bring a lightness to the film with their humor, self-mockery, and a down-to-earth view. In this way we discover the daily violence they encounter in life where even a word like rape doesn’t leave an impression anymore. Through the dedication of the therapist and the dynamics of their conversations we see how the youngsters slowly become stimulated to move on from their painful memories and repair their self-image – without conviction, shame, or guilt. Step by step, they learn to set boundaries, make their own choices, and process their anger and damaged faith, to take back control over their own bodies and even begin to love themselves.
