Every two years an artist is invited to exhibit in the building of the German Pavilion in Venice to represent Germany at the Art Biennial. The starting point for the essay film Relocating a Structure is Maria Eichhorns contribution for the German Pavilion in 2022. The film introduces Eichhorn’s concept of relocating the building of the German Pavilion for the duration of the exhibition period as a cinematic thought experiment. What if Germany’s national Pavilion would disappear for some months? What stories could be told? Through the voices of various experts in the field of architecture, art and activism, the film shows a critical approach to German history and links the nazi-fascist architecture of the German Pavilion with a detailed search for traces of historical and contemporary resistance movements in Venice. It examines the power of art to challenge social conditions and exposing totalitarian structures in society, tells about the Italian resistance – from the partisans to present-day activists, and emphasizes the problems of overpopulation and pollution caused by massive tourism in Venice.
