THE DIALOGUE POLICE

Freedom of speech, democracy and the right to demonstrate. In Sweden, a special unit struggles to ensure everyone’s right to speak their mind – and they are armed only with words. A captivating film from the frontline of democracy and dilemmas.

The Dialogue Police is a special unit whose mission is to strengthen democracy and ensure the right of all citizens to say what they want. Armed only with words – and an otherworldly patience! – Anna, Calle, Jimmy, Johan, Erik, Nicole and Semsi work to ensure other people’s freedom of speech. From anti-muslim protesters to climate activists who have glued themselves to the asphalt. They mediate between the public and the organisers, and try to explain to passers-by why everyone has the right to raise their voice in public. And not everyone understands why anyone else can stand on a beer crate and share their opinions with the world – especially when they themselves disagree or feel mocked. The dilemmas are part of the job as dialogue police. But at a time when democratic dialogue is under pressure, the paradoxical fight for other people’s freedom of expression is more urgent than ever.
