THE GOLDEN SWAN

In 1995, emerging Norwegian artist Hans Christian Ostrø travels to India seeking creative and personal transformation. Months later, he is abducted in Kashmir by the militant group al-Faran and held hostage for five weeks. During his captivity, he clandestinely writes poems and letters addressed to his sister, filmmaker Anette Ostrø. Recovered after his execution, these writings form the emotional and narrative core of The Golden Swan.
Drawing on personal archives and contemporary reflection, the film reframes a defining early act of modern terrorism through an intimate, character-driven lens. It explores themes of artistic identity, moral resilience, and the possibility of forgiveness under extreme duress, positioning Ostrø’s final months as both a personal testament and a broader meditation on humanity in the face of violence.
